What is lead enrichment?

Lead enrichment is adding missing information to a lead you already have, such as a verified work email, job title, company size or industry, so you can qualify and contact them. It differs from lead generation, which creates new leads. You can enrich by hand, with a data provider, or with AI.

What lead enrichment adds

A lead often arrives with only a name and a company, or just an email. Enrichment fills in what you need to decide whether and how to reach out.

  • Person: job title, seniority, work email, location.
  • Company: size, industry, headquarters country, website.
  • Context: a short summary of what the company does, or a line you can use to open a message.

Lead enrichment vs lead generation vs data cleaning

Most teams need all three. Enrichment comes after you have a list and before you send anything.

  • Lead generation finds new people and companies that fit your target.
  • Lead enrichment improves leads you already have by adding missing fields.
  • Data cleaning fixes what is wrong, such as duplicates, typos and outdated titles.

Where enrichment data comes from

Enrichment data comes from provider databases, public business information, live lookups at the moment you ask, your own CRM history, and AI that reads a company website and summarises it.

Each source trades off coverage, freshness and accuracy. A large stored database covers many records but can be out of date. A live lookup is fresher but can cost more per record. Whatever you use, test it on a small sample of your own leads before you buy at scale.

A worked example

Take a sheet of 500 leads with only a name and a company on each row. You want each row to have a verified work email, the person's title and company size, and a one-line opener.

In FUNEL, adding a verified work email costs 5 credits per lead and is charged only when an email is found. Five hundred leads is therefore at most about 2,500 credits, which is about $11.25 at the base rate of $2.25 per 500 credits before volume discounts, and less for leads with no email found. Profile and company enrichment have their own prices. Test on 20 rows first, then run the rest.

How to enrich a list, step by step

  1. Decide the fields you need

Only enrich what changes a decision or a message. An email and a title are usually enough to start.

  2. Test on a small sample

Run 20 rows and check them by hand: is the title current, does the email look right.

  3. Verify emails

An unverified guess can bounce and hurt your sending reputation. Verify before you send.

  4. Run the rest

Once the sample looks right, enrich the full list.

  5. Refresh before big campaigns

People change jobs. Re-check older records before you send to them again.

Common mistakes

  • Enriching leads you will never contact.
  • Skipping verification and sending to guessed emails.
  • Treating old data as current. Check the freshness date.
  • Adding more fields than you will use.

Enrich a list in FUNEL

Import a CSV or build a list, then add verified emails and AI columns in one sheet. Run on a handful of rows first, then on the rest.

Frequently asked questions

What is lead enrichment in simple terms?
It is filling in the missing details about a lead, such as an email, a job title or a company size, so a sales team can decide whether and how to contact them.
What is the difference between lead enrichment and lead generation?
Lead generation creates new leads. Lead enrichment adds information to leads you already have.
How often should leads be re-enriched?
People change roles and companies, so re-check records before any large campaign, especially ones that are several months old.
Is lead enrichment legal?
It depends on the data, where the people are, and how you use it. You need a lawful basis for processing personal data and must respect opt-outs. See our guide to B2B cold email and GDPR. This is general information, not legal advice.
